Brexit is now a fact. The question for the City of London, most of whose denizens would have preferred to stay as a member of the European Union (EU), is what to do next. The uncertainty is ended. A process of disengagement from a highly regulated trade bloc without an open market in financial services has now begun.

The 1,256-page trade and co-operation agreement between the United Kingdom signed at Christmas included just 3½ pages on financial services. Discussions are under way on a proposed memorandum of understanding on financial services, to be agreed by the end of March 2021. But that is only the start of prolonged negotiations.

Throughout the 12 years that have elapsed since the financial crisis of 2007-08, much of the energy of the City was subsumed in implementing European and European versions of international financial regulation. Compliance mattered more than creativity. But Brexit now provides an opportunity to opt out of unduly onerous EU regulation and re-engage with the rest of the world.

So who are the creative, energetic entrepreneurs to compare with the great City figures of the past such as Sigmund Warburg and Kenneth Keith? They are certainly there somewhere – despite everything, the United Kingdom still ranks as the fourth most innovative country in the world in the 2020 Global Innovation Index – and it is their destiny to re-make the City.

Future of Finance wants to get to know them and their plans. In every sector of every industry in the City – asset management, wealth management, capital markets, retail banking, payments, funds, securities, clearing and settlement, derivatives, insurance, and even law and accounting – there are entrepreneurs with ambitions to transform the status quo.
